The Flapjack Family of Cartoons

This diagram displays all the shows whose creators originally worked on one of the other cartoons in the diagram, originating from The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack.

I was inspired to do this after seeing a comment about how J.G. Quintel, Pen Ward, and Alex Hirsch all worked together on Flapjack and then went on to make three of the most beloved shows of the 2010s: Regular Show, Adventure Time, and Gravity Falls respectively.

I’ve probably missed some other shows, so let me know! You could also take this back a lot further and add a bunch more cartoons, but things start to overlap and get complicated when you go back further than Flapjack.

EDIT: I’ve added Amphibia. Some of you are also saying I should add the DuckTales reboot but the lead developers of that show haven’t worked on anything else on the diagram so there’s nowhere to put it.

As a science interpreter, I work with a lot of animal bones. This means that I am often responsible for explaining the concept of mortality to very young children who do not understand that a skeleton is not alive.

That’s fine when they’re 2 to 6 years old. They usually accept it with some confusion or file it away to worry about later. Older children who do not yet know what death is present some difficulties. If a 9 year old asks me, “Why won’t this skeleton wake up?” it may be because their ignorance of death has been preserved on purpose. I do not sugar-coat science or use confusing euphemisms, but figuring out exactly where to start answering that in a way they can process is… tricky. I tend to get caught up in trying to parse their preexisting knowledge. Do they know what it means to be ‘alive’ in a biological sense? Do they know what hearts and brains and other organs do? Do they know that we have bones inside of us?

Please, parents. If you’re shunting the responsibility of explaining mortality to your child onto me, please give me time to implement a personalized lesson.

This reminded me of one of my… more memorable times flying hawks with some tourists. The family included a young girl, who I believe was around 6 or 7. We ended up taking Rua, who is essentially the Boss Hawk and Knows It, and everything went generally fine until Rua spotted a squirrel.

Now, this normally isn’t an issue. These are working raptors and when we weren’t doing guest experiences we were out hunting with them. The guests knew this, and I always warned people ahead of time that if the hawk spots prey in the woods, they will go after it. If that happens, I will run off after them and the guests are free to follow or not depending on their comfort level.

Anyway, Rua goes for the squirrel. I follow her, and so does the little girl, who is yelling about me saving the squirrel. Needless to say, I did not save the squirrel. I traded Rua for it and after a quick assessment realized it wasn’t going to make it, so I went to kill it quickly to prevent any further suffering, all while this little girl became Increasingly Upset with me despite my efforts to shield her from what I was doing. By the time I had slipped the squirrel into my bag, she was in full hysterics, and I figured it was probably time to head back.

Her parents were pretty much stunned silent I guess, so I was trying to calm her down while recalling Rua and going to tether her to the father’s glove. The girl’s screams of how I “didn’t have to do that!!” distracted me enough that I forgot to show Rua my open palm before reaching for her jesses, and so she thought I was giving her another piece of meat and promptly put a talon through my hand. My fault entirely, but believe me it didn’t help my case with the little girl that not only had I apparently failed to save the squirrel from the evil hawk but now I was bleeding everywhere because the evil hawk was now attacking me. (I also had a very awkward moment where I tried to stop the bleeding by licking it, which just made more of a mess, and the grandmother stared me and then silently handed me a tissue from her purse).

The grandfather sort of came to my aid as we headed back, assuring the girl that I did have to kill the squirrel and that what she saw was nature in action, and that it was okay. She demanded to see the squirrel, and I said she could once we got back and put Rua away, since if I pulled the squirrel out while Rua could see it then we would start the whole thing over. In my head I was already imagining the complaints my boss was going to receive from the girl’s parents because I traumatized their child.

It turned out okay though, because we got back and I did pull the squirrel out and let the girl see it. I explained that hawks like Rua only survive because they needed to hunt animals like the squirrel, and that Rua wasn’t bad but doing what hawks do – and that she’s really good at it! The squirrel didn’t die for nothing, as we would eat it (it’s true, several of my coworkers were very fond of squirrel dinners), and this is why we worked together with the hawks, so that we could all get more food.

The girl was quiet at this point. She touched the squirrel, and then she touched my hand where Rua had footed me (and I explained that Rua was not attacking me at all, but that she had mistakenly thought I had food in my hand to give to her, and that it was my fault that I hadn’t given her the right cue). She looked up at her grandfather, and then walked over to where Rua was in the aviary and said something to her that I couldn’t hear, and then they left.

I didn’t get in trouble. (Though months later Rua did set her sights on a little girl’s puppy, and took several years off my life.)

WHAT THE HELL KIND OF BATMAN HAVE YOU BEEN WATCHING?

The best part is that most of the lore, especially Batman: The Animated Series, gets to a point in Batman’s career when everyone asks the question of why someone would rob a bank in Gotham when they know that if they approached Batman, and coincidentally Bruce Wayne, they could get the help they needed.

That’s the whole point of Batman. Granted there have been modernized adaptations that paint him out to be nothing more than a growling, punching, antihero. But nobody ever said those adaptations were canon or even good. The original Batman comics, most of the newer comics, the Animated Series, the animated spinoffs, even the Arkham video games all operate under the lore that Batman does everything within his power to help as many villains as he can, even if it means going against cops, politicians, etc. That’s what originally made him the vigilante. He went against the social norms. He did everything that a hero shouldn’t do, not in a murderous way, but in a taking-sides way. Every other hero swoops in to save the corrupt politician from the criminal. Batman swoops in to save the criminal from the corrupt politician.

I actually never thought about this. And I realized that unlike other heroes who just want to see their antagonist gone and really don’t care about nothing but killing them and stopping them, Batman wants to try and help them out. When people would normally push for a serial killer to be sentenced to death, a person could want that killer to be in rehabilitation. This makes me like Batman a lot more.
